چکیده

The in-beam PET camera has been operated in combination with beam tracking [2]. A homogeneous PMMA phantom was placed in the center of the field of view of the scanner and moved parallel to the two detector heads (left-right in beam’s eye view with 3 cm peak-to-peak amplitude and ≈ 3 s period). The prescribed dose was a twodimensionally spread-out Bragg-peak (SOBP) of 5×5 cm extension, centered at a depth of 10 cm in the central plane of the phantom. The list-mode PET acquisition was performed during the 6 min of beam delivery and for 25 min after irradiation (MOV). The data stream was synchronized with the time course of the dynamic beam application and with the motion monitor [2]. Additional 18 min of decay were acquired with the activated phantom kept steady (STAT), for comparison with a separate measurement of the same treatment field without motion (REF). For time-resolved reconstruction, the reconstruction algorithm [3] has been extended to distribute events to the different phases of the motion trajectory, including attenuation and solid angle corrections for moving geometries.

Investigation of tumor motion influence on applied dose distribution in conventional proton therapy vs. IMPT a 4D Monte Carlo simulation study

Background: in radiation treatment of moving targets located in thorax region of patient body, the delivered dose does not match with the planned treatment, resulting in some over and under dosage in the tumor volume, as a function of motion magnitude and frequency. Several efforts have been done to investigate the target motion effects on dose distribution in the target and surrounding normal ...

4D in-beam PET of moving targets for different irradiation scenarios

Introduction Ion therapy allows a high precision, tumor conformal dose application but it is very sensitive to density changes along the beam path. Intra-fractional tumor motion due to respiration increases the risk of an incorrect irradiation and thus requires a reliable dosimetry as it was done by means of 3D in-beam PET for more than 400 patients at the experimental heavy ion treatment facil...

Influence of a point source motion in PET images and its compensation

Introduction Positron emission tomography (PET) allows to assess the relevant parameters of the applied dose distribution in ion beam therapy. It has been clinically implemented but only for the treatment of static targets. The planned application of hadron therapy to intra-fractional moving tumor sites demands an upgrade of the dose monitoring system in terms of regarding the shifted decay loc...

4D PET: Beyond conventional dynamic PET imaging

In this paper, we review novel techniques in the emerging field of spatiotemporal 4D PET imaging. We will discuss existing limitations in conventional dynamic PET imaging which involves independent reconstruction of dynamic PET datasets. Various approaches that seek to attempt some or all of these limitations are reviewed in this work, including techniques that util...

4D dose simulation in volumetric arc therapy: Accuracy and affecting parameters

Radiotherapy of lung and liver lesions has changed from normofractioned 3D-CRT to stereotactic treatment in a single or few fractions, often employing volumetric arc therapy (VMAT)-based techniques. Potential unintended interference of respiratory target motion and dynamically changing beam parameters during VMAT dose delivery motivates establishing 4D quality assurance (4D QA) procedures to as...
